Life Experience
My Career
Shadow, Corpus Christi Medical Center and C.C. Outpatient Surgery Center
May 2017 - August 2017
It all began with a handshake, a disrupted tendon, and a passion for medicine. The surgeon who preformed my most recent opperation allowed me to come shadow him in the OR. In a flurry of excitement, I was making the 45 minute drive every morning to the largest city 3 town over to watch surgery by 6 am. I kept a portfolio of all the surgeries I watched. Sketch after sketch tracks my progress in understanding the anatomy and function of the human body. It was an incredible opportunity. Here, I gained invaluable experience in Orthopedics as well as some hard life lessons. With this, I bolstered the dreams of my future self. Between 5 surgeons, 3 anastezioloists and one physicians assistant in particular, I have an unbelievable set of mentors. I am honored to have been invited to return so that I may further my field education during school holidays.
Scribe, South Texas Bone and Joint
May 2017 - August 2017
From the surgery center, one surgeon in particular took an interest in me. Dr. Bernard Seger and his PA, Jackie Coates, took me under their wings and brought me to heights I didn't know I could achieve without having any college degrees or certifications. They hired me as a scribe in their clinic. As a scribe, I did patient intakes, ordered x-rays and equipment/medications, I would keep the doctor updated on his patients, and even follow individuals from their initial consultation all the way through to post op recovery and release.Â
My main job was to find ways to improve navigation of the computer system that we opperated on. It was an unforgiving platform, but there was plenty of nifty things to figure out. For example, I found a way to connect smart phones with patient files so that secure images could be taken from the phone and transferred directly to the patient's file without saving the image to the phone and risking a HIPPA violation (or having a some gnarly wounds in one's photo stream).
In the hospital, I often corrected dictations and completed charts. We would round in the hospital a few times a week before clinic in the morning and on Tuesdays I had a front row seat to total knee arthroplasties!
I will be returning when I go back down south during school holidays.
Caretaker
January 1999 - present
I was brought into this world for a specific purpose. My mother was recently divorced and pregnant. My grandmother had just been diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer: a prognosis of a 3% chance of survival. She fought. She defied the odds. She defeated the cancer.
All my life, she told me I had given her a special reason to fight, to live. 12 years later the intense radiation from treatment caused the mass of scar tissue on her chest to become necrotic. This is when I knew my purpose in life. I had always known I was a healer, but it wasn't until I went on the journey of treatment, failure, surgery, and recovery with my grandmother that I knew I was to become a surgeon.

I became my grandmother's caretaker. I cleaned and dressed her wound. I kept notes of her healing, or lack thereof. When I knew what it felt like to hold the hand of someone in need, look them in the eye, and let them know I was going to do everything in my power to help them: I discovered myself. I found the fire roaring in my chest. Now, I live with an insatiable flame driving me to my destiny.

Scribe, AMISTAD Community Health Center Corpus Christi
May 2015 - August 2015
In AMISTAD, I had my first experience on the other side of the waiting room. I had volunteered my summer at a Health Center in downtown Corpus that provided care to the underserved peoples of the city. It was an incredibly eye opening - and heart warming - experience for me. My position was mainly data entry for the doctor. I would accompany Dr. Lori Anderson and record HPI and exam findings for her. In this experience I learned the importance of another language. - This is why I am considering pursuing Spanish as a minor. - Many clients did not speak english at all and a translator was often needed. Seeing the frustration in the eyes of those who needed help but couldn't communicate was difficult. I wasnt to reduce my ignorance of other languages so that I may help a wider audience of people. One day in particular stuck out to me. We dedicated a whole day to the community and the doctors, nurses, and patients all got together to; replant and prune the gardens, fit bike helmets on young kids, barbecue, and promote better health. It was beautiful. Seeing the joy and love in this community gave me a sense of belonging that I want to spread everywhere I touch.

AthenaNet
I am proficient in navigating AthenaNet and am apt at learning new systems. I also speak on a basic level of medical terminology and have an efficient, yet colorful, format for recording patient intake.

Communication
I have excellent communication and leadership skills. I work well in a wide array of situations and with a wide array of people. I am strong, yet agreeable in nature and have a knack for making people feel comfortable and important. This I have found especially useful in the medical profession.

Work Ethic and Creativity
Because I am driven so readily by passion, I have a hungry work ethic. I love learning new things and completing tasks to the best of my ability. Due to this I can tackle most anything that comes my way.
When this is pared with my creativity, nothing gets in my way. Inspire me and my embers will burn loud.
Educational Experience
What I’ve Learned
Texas A&M University
2017-2021
I am a current undergraduate student at Texas A&M University. I am a proud member of the honors department and a chemistry major. I love chemistry because I am fascinated by the building blocks of the universe. And I have noticed a pattern. It seems like the macroscale reflects the microscale; I believe that by understanding the very smallest tendencies of nature, I will gain a better understanding of the world around me on countless levels. My minor is undecided between the subjects of spanish, neuroscience, and psychology. I think it is invaluable to know another language. But I am also very excited about how people work... And then with neuroscience, it is the neurochemistry of how people work! Many important decisions are yet to come.

1999 - death
There is something valuable to be learned every day. Though I have too many studies in this ever changing degree plan to describe, I will say this: if one is passionate, enthusiastic, and actively pursuing their dreams, the world will guide them and success will be eminent. When a burning heart follows the love, everything else works itself out.
"Imagination is more important than knowledge."

Achieving Destiny

Experience
coming soon
I am learning how to navigate university before heading to work. Once I am more confident in my time management skills I will begin my career in medicine. I foresee many years spent in pursuit of my medical license, so perhaps an interim job as an EMT will be a great outlet to tame my eagerness and to be able to help people. It will also give me a broader perspective of the reality of medicine.

Volunteer Work
at the hearth
Volunteering is something I am passionate about. Especially in medicine. I believe that if intent lies in a paycheck, then medicine is no longer about the patients. My first experience on the other side of a medical facility was volunteering at a low income health center in downtown Corpus. It showed me an entirely different side of life and broadened my world view exponentially. I intend to pursue more volunteering opportunities at a new free health center in Corpus when I return to the area on break.

Success
crossing boarders, removing barriers
Combining my belief in the need for love and desire in the healthcare profession, I aim to serve the peoples of this world with the most high class care for no cost. My dream is to travel to nations in need of medical assistance and donate my services. As a wound care specialist and reconstructive surgeon, I will be giving those disfigured by violence, disease, and genetics, another chance at life.
